Melancholy by Reowyn Melancholy by Reowyn
I love melancholy subjects, because I often am one myself. Here's another mermaid, as promised. And I hope there are a few more to come.

chalk pastel and a little bit of colored pencil on recycled brown paper bag.

edit: I added some bubbles to make it at least a tiny bit more interesting.

There is something about mermaids that I'm also can relate myself when I'm sad...
Perhaps our souls are close them ? : )

I like how the background is golden and not black or grey, parchemnt always reminds me of dried flowers like a state of delayed decay.
Mermaids and melancholy go together like fish and bubbles. Yay for sad fishmaids^^
The green shade on her tail is nice.

The bubbles are great and I love the shadows trailing behind her hair. (I surmise that she dyed her hair with squid ink for prom... but here date just wanted to get into her ... scales?)

Breathtakingly beautiful. Great composition, great use of texture, the colour and subject evokes a strong sense of isolation and yes, melancholy and as many people have already pointed out, your use of form is perfect. You've always have such great fluidity to your pieces.

You get the softly shimmering luminescence of her skin so amazingly right... this is so beautiful. She seems real to me, and I want to reach out and fall into that brown paper bag and swim with her. I love her expression and the way it is even expressed through her hand. And do you know what else I love? I love that those shimmering floating sparkles which always seem to populate your drawings actually illuminate her tail and her body with their small light. The way you've done all the light here, actually, is incredible.

This is very beautiful. I love the shape she makes on the page and I'm so pleased her tail really is fish-like and not like legs encased in a tail, which is too often the case in many mermaid artworks and quite a bugbear of mine. :giggle:

good, I also like when the tails are more fish-like. I all too often revert back to the flowy, long tail though. :)

Oh, long flowy tails are good - provided they are still fish like. :giggle: What I'm bothered by is the suggestion of knees - as though it were merely an encasing over legs (which I know you don't do). :hmm:

oh my! Those awkward, knee bending tails?! I do hate them too. I haven't seen one in a while - they seem to pop up more often in anime art. My goodness, this is taking me back to the days when I actually attempted to draw anime...scary. ahaha.
